On the high grounds above the Omišalj bay, there are traces of the fortress Fortičina. This is where the traces of an older fortification were found, a watchtower dated back into the late Antiquity. The remains of a larger late antique cistern indicate that this was the place from which the city Fulfinum was supplied by water. Of course, the important strategic position, from which the harbour and the village Omišalj could have been controlled, influenced the construction of the Medieval fortress during the Frankopans, which existed until the 14th century.
