The village Stara Baška is situated under the dry and barren massif, on the southern slopes of the island, sheltered from the bora. The surrounding landscape is extremely interesting, almost magical. If you set out to the beach Zala, to the south-east from the village, you can find the remains of the church of St Hieronymus on the hill. This is a single-nave church with a semi-circular apse on the north, geostrategically well-situated owing to the possibility of observing the sea passages to Rab and southern island groups. Some minor restoration activities are performed on this 13th century edifice, while a systematic archaeological exploration of the site still awaits. According to the insights so far, the plateau along the church contained an ancient complex, which shows how attractive and important the location is since Antiquity.
